Lorne would have to be the best known beachside resort in Victoria and is often referred to as Victoria’s premier tourist town. Lorne really is picture postcard perfect and you would have to do some serious travel to find a more picturesque seaside town. Loutit Bay is perhaps the most family friendly beach on the entire Great Ocean Road. It is very safe for swimming and is patrolled in the summer months. It is also one of the best places to learn to surf. There is no need to worry about buying expensive surfing equipment- you can hire everything you need in Lorne at one of the many surf shops and it’s not expensive. Almost any water sport is available in Lorne with the possible exception of jet skis – and who wants these loud monstrosities near your kids! Fishing is now even more popular with the new Lorne pier. Excellent fish are taken from this pier on a regular basis – snapper, trevally, whiting, flathead, shark and the list goes on. For those of you who are not interested in ocean things you will be pleasantly surprised with loads of other land based activities available. Just take a short drive inland to refreshing temperate rainforests and a number of sensational waterfalls. Lorne’s very own Erskine Falls is one of the best along the Great Ocean Road.
